Esperanto was created in 1887 by Dr Ludovik Zamenhof to be a second language that would allow people who speak different native languages to communicate, yet at the same time to retain their own languages and cultural identities. Today Esperanto is spoken in most countries in the world and has over a million learners on Duolingo.  It can be best summarised by Sammy Kennedy, a 19-year-old aspiring photographer in Manchester, England, who says:

Learn English if you want to make money; learn Esperanto if you want to make friends.
